According to media reports, the renovation and expansion of the Stuttgart Opera House will take at least four years longer than originally planned. The costs could then rise to between 1.5 and two billion euros, reports SWR. Previously, there had been talk of up to one billion.

Critics of the project are now calling for alternative solutions, including a less expensive new building for the opera.

In the future, ballet and concerts could be held in the old building, which would then be cheaper to renovate.
