Toyota Aygo ranks as most reliable first-time buyer car, finds Warranty Solutions data

Warranty specialists Warranty Solutions Group (WSG) has named Toyota’s Aygo as the most popular cars among first-time buyers, based on vehicle repair claims from its dealer network over the past 12 months.

The analysis covers the top 10 best-selling used models for 18-25 year olds.

Topping the list is the Toyota Aygo, with a low warranty claim rate of just 6.25%. The most common repairs for the Aygo were front wiper motors (£289), clutch release bearings (£341), and air compressors (£469).

Launched in 2005, the Aygo has remained a strong contender in the city car segment, with the latest Aygo X hitting the market in 2022.

In second place, the Ford Fiesta had a warranty claim rate of 8.32%. Common repairs included coil springs (£186), alternators (£386), and water pumps (£235). Known for its spacious interior and solid reliability, the Fiesta remains a popular choice among young buyers.

The Suzuki Swift ranked third, with an 8.99% claim rate. The most frequent issues were timing chains (£1,630), alternators (£249), and coil springs (£164). The Swift, now in its fourth generation, continues to be a favourite due to its global appeal and affordability.

At the other end of the spectrum, the least reliable models were the Vauxhall Corsa (17.87% claim rate), Fiat 500 (14.05%), and Volkswagen Polo (12.68%).

Steph Newbery, director of WSG commented: “The superminis market segment is shrinking, what with the Ford Fiesta ceasing production and fewer manufacturers investing in small cars, as a result of the growing demand for hybrid and electric SUVs and saloons.

“In the used car market, there is a great selection of reliable and affordable models for new drivers which offer great styling, safety features and affordability.

“However, we recently conducted a survey with over 500 motorists aged between 18-25 who had a WSG warranty. This revealed that running costs and insurance premiums were the two main factors which had influenced their car buying decision.”

Almost two thirds (62%) of the vehicles analysed were between 5 and 7 years old. The most common issues across the 10 models in this age range were Nox sensors, alternators, water pumps and suspension failures (mainly coil springs and shock absorbers) – whilst electrical and electronic systems collectively made up the biggest percentage of all claims paid at 20.23%.
